Recognising and rewarding best practice in data centre energy efficiency

EUCoC (EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres)

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, plays a major role in the EU Code of Conduct for data centres, via the Best Practice Working Group. In its role as an endorser of the Code, BCS has developed CEEDA, an assessment based award scheme designed to complement the code.

Organisations within the EU can apply for Participant and/or Endorser status in the Code of Conduct for individual data centres. This process is voluntary and self-assessed with a minimal level of data reporting to the EU JRC each year.

The CEEDA award programme is separate from the EU CoC process. Accordingly, Participant or Endorser status in the Code of Conduct will not receive recognition within CEEDA and similarly, achieving a CEEDA Award will not guarantee Participant or Endorser status in the Code of Conduct.

CEEDA uses the Best Practices as the foundation of assessment but Assessors will require evidence that practices in each data centre are implemented and will review activities onsite at a level of detail. The CEEDA areas that are assessed are based on best practice elements of the Code. A top level list is available in the Process section of the CEEDA website.

How do organisations adopt a role within the EU CoC?

There are two roles which an organisation can be granted to demonstrate its adherence to the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres: as Participant, or an Endorser. These roles are not exclusive; an organisation may sign as both a Participant and an Endorser if they fulfil the criteria for both roles.

1. Participant

A Participant operates one or more data centres or equipment within data centres and commits to energy reporting and implementation of certain practices from the Best Practice guide.

2. Endorser

Other bodies involved with data centre operators may become Endorsers by committing to support the code and Participants through the development of products, information, services, education or other programmes.
